AIM-PROGRESS 2017 achievements

Westrock and Colgate-Palmolive were the hosts of the first AIM-PROGRESS member meeting of the year, held in Richmond, VA. In its 10th year of existence, AIM-PROGRESS continues to deliver value to members in terms of learning, networking and building their own responsible sourcing approaches. In 2017 we can proud of an impressive list of achievements:

2018 will be seeing a continuation of our efforts and closer collaboraton with similar initiatives.

New business toolkit for suppliers

AIM-PROGRESS is pleased to annouce its latest deliverable – a business toolkit for suppliers, explaining in simple terms how good management practices, which our members require through their responsible sourcing policies, are an essential part of ensuring a sustainable and resilient business model. This publication was put together by Partner Africa, in collaboration with AB-Inbev, Diageo and The Coca-Cola Company, on behalf of AIM-PROGRESS.
This toolkit provides practical assistance on how to improve Productivity, Quality and Workforce Management – areas which are inextricably linked. People are a core and valuable asset for every business and in order to have an efficient, productive business, employees need to work in good conditions. Good working conditions go hand in hand with productivity, quality and efficiency as essential elements of building a sustainable and resilient business. The toolkit will enable them to understand each issue and why it matters for your and their business, what is required, what that means in practice, and will also enable suppliers to assess their current situation and provide them with practical tools to make the necessary improvements.
The toolkit is focused on production suppliers of all sizes and locations. Although it will be particularly useful for manufacturing sites, the principles within it may be applicable to other non-manufacturing businesses.
Each chapter will be made available as a separate document with a brief introduction and endnotes and an action plan (so that the chapters can be communicated separately on a single issue to a supplier struggling with a particular topic). It will be made available via our AIM-PROGRESS website.

AIM-PROGRESS holds supplier event in Mexico on sugar

Working conditions in the Mexican sugar industry are far from ideal, and brands sourcing their sugar from the region are already actively engaging to implement improvements. AIM-PROGRESS is now looking to give more impetus by facilitating collaborative improvement projects, instead of each company working in isolation, often with the same suppliers.


As a first step, four AIM-PROGRESS members - Coca-Cola, Kellogg, Nestlé and PepsiCo - hosted an industry awareness workshop on 14 November in Mexico City, gathering 70 delegates from sugar cane growers, sugar corporations, traders/refiners, NGOs and civil society as well as representatives from the Mexican government (Labor, Social Development, Agriculture and Finance Institutions).




The morning started with PWC pointing out the risk if companies and their supply chains do not act rapidly to embed the UN SDGs into their businesses, with compelling examples of negative impact on business performance. Nicaraguan Mill Ingenio San Antonio shared their best practices around hydration, shade/rest programs for workers thereby reducing CKD disease risk among their workforce. ABC and World Vision talked about their work around improving shelter conditions and preventing child labor in particular among migrant workers. 


During a series of afternoon workshops dealing with shelters, rest/shade/hydration and child labor, participants had the opportunity to identify barriers and suggest actions for the short and long term, to address the endemic problems in the industry. 90%+ of attendees reported this was a helpful event that will enhance their sustainability journey.


The next step will be to focus on a specific collaborative remediation project between brands and the local sugar industry, with the aim to roll out concrete improvements during the harvesting season.

AIM-PROGRESS delivers worker voice based impact measurement tool

Measuring the impact on workers of our responsible sourcing activities is key to find out whether AIM-PROGRESS is actually “positively impacting people’s lives” (as stated in our mission).
In a collaborative effort with SEDEX and Impactt Ltd, AIM-PROGRESS wanted to get insights on three main areas:
1. Do workers feels safe at their place of work?
2. Do they feels respected?
3. Is there a sense of income security & progression?
They jointly developed an impact measurement tool, including worker voice technology, which consists of four main elements:
The tool is available to AIM-PROGRESS members on the impact measuremnent section of the member zone.

AIM-PROGRESS members join forces to promote responsible sourcing in Malaysia

On 24 October 2017, more than 150 participants attended the AIM-PROGRESS Responsible Sourcing Forum in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia to discuss common challenges around responsible sourcing and learn about practical tools and processes they can develop to improve their business practices. This forum was sponsored by four AIM-PROGRESS members: Ferrero, Nestlé, PepsiCo and Unilever and supported by The Consumer Goods Forum and CSR Asia.




Following an introduction of AIM-PROGRESS, the co-host organizations presented their commitments and progress made around responsible sourcing and shared key takeaways of their engagement with suppliers on labor issues including forced labor in Malaysia and Southeast Asia.


Melizel Asuncion from Verité emphasized the importance of the local context and how these issues manifest in different sectors in order to properly address labor issues such as health and safety or forced labor. Melizel also highlighted the forced labor and debt bondage-related risks that already exist in the supply chain before migrant workers reach the workplace or get hired for a job.



This one-day forum also provided a series workshops designed to provide practical solutions around migrant labor management, grievance mechanisms and sustainable land use.


  • The first workshop on migrant labor management was facilitated by Lara White from the International Organization for Migration and focused on the human and labor rights vulnerabilities of migrant workers providing best practices examples to manage migrant workforce at all stages of the migration process (recruitment, deployment, employment and return).


  • The second workshop on sustainable land use was led by Dejan Lewis, Hannah Timmins and Quek Karl Yen from TFT. The workshop covered engagement of supply chain actors which led to providing examples of actions to develop a multi-stakeholder approach for mitigating social and environmental risks of forest clearance.


  • The third workshop on grievance mechanisms was led by Patrick McKeller from ELEVATE and Khai Yau Chua from the Responsible Business Alliance (formerly known as the Electronic Industry Citizenship Coalition). This workshop discussed the two types of grievance mechanisms (internal/external), and focused on an interactive session helping participants understand how to promote, manage, and measure their own internal mechanisms. Responsible Business Alliance also presented the current results of their Workplace of Choice Program in Malaysia, and the importance this program places on the internal relationships and communications between workers and management.




AIM-PROGRESS organizes these events globally to provide a forum for suppliers to learn, network and share best practices, while engaging with customers. The event’s intent is for supplier representatives to gain a better understanding of labor rights issues in Malaysia and Southeast Asia and concrete actions that can be taken to drive change and build more sustainable supply chains within their own and extended value chains. Since the beginning of these events, AIM-PROGRESS has organized over 30 such sessions globally, reaching over 3,000 companies.


AIM-PROGRESS is an association of 42 Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) companies that seek to promote responsible sourcing practices and sustainable supply chains. By working together, member companies focus on improving compliance performance while avoiding duplication of social compliance audits.
