AIM-PROGRESS welcomes a new member

We are pleased to announce that Iglo Foods Group, Europe's leading branded frozen food company, joins AIM-PROGRESS. Iglo produce and market branded frozen food products in 11 countries and distribute across a number of other countries in Central and Eastern Europe. This now brings AIM-PROGRESS membership to 40 FMCG sector companies.

Auditing competence - GSCP publishes updated reference tool

The Global Social Compliance Programme (GSCP) has released a new and updated version of its Reference Tool for Auditing Competence. This updated version reflects higher expectations from GSCP members towards the auditing industry and pushes to even higher standards of best practice in auditor competence for better quality audits.


Benefits across the industry and for workers: “Brands and retailers that want to safeguard human rights and decent labour conditions in their global supply chains need to know where the problems may be. Already the UN Guiding Principles for Business and Human Rights require this,” explains Jan Furstenborg, independent labour relations expert and member of the GSCP Advisory Board. “Social auditing remains their main tool in most countries and industries. The GSCP Reference Tool for Auditing Competence wants to make sure that auditing remains credible and serious. Setting minimum professional standards, it supports buyers and their suppliers as well as the auditing industry itself. It helps schemes and initiatives ensure that they offer services at the highest industry standards. Most of all it benefits workers, ensuring that social audits lead to remediation and respect for human dignity at workplaces. This is a great tool and will set high industry standards, complementing the GSCP Reference Code.


AIM-PROGRESS recognises the GSCP tool as a valuable reference document for its membership and encourages its members to align their audit competence requirements to the expectations set out in the document.

Responsible Sourcing Forum in Frankfurt, Germany

More than 250 suppliers attended AIM-PROGRESS Responsible Sourcing Forum hosted by Nestlé on 17th November 2014 in Frankfurt (Germany) to promote responsible sourcing standards in the Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) supply chain. The forum provided an opportunity for suppliers to engage with business leaders from the brand industry, to exchange views, to share learnings regarding responsible sourcing practice and to gain a better understanding of audit requirements based upon common expectations from the AIM-PROGRESS members. The moderated panel discussions included topics such as approaching the major non-compliances faced by German companies, and different management systems that are available for suppliers to engage in responsible sourcing.

AIM-PROGRESS welcomes two new members

We are pleased to announce that Cargill and Verallia are the latest addition to the growing number of AIM-PROGRESS members. Cargill provides food, agriculture, financial and industrial products worldwide, and is a supplier to many AIM-PROGRESS member companies. Verallia is a leading global supplier of glass containers for the food and beverage industry, providing innovative, customized and eco-friendly packaging solutions worldwide. This now brings AIM-PROGRESS membership to 39 FMCG sector companies.

AIM-PROGRESS membership meeting in NYC

Colgate-Palmolive hosted the November membership meeting of AIM-PROGRESS in New York City on 3-4 November which gathered 50 participants from 30 companies to further develop member capabilities in responsible sourcing, to progress the ambitious strategy to "positively impact people's lives" and to engage with relevant stakeholders. Colgate kicked off the meeting with a presentation by Lori MIchelin,Vice-President Gobal Sustainabiliy & EOHS on their ambitious sustainability program which comprises some challenging targets.

Oxfam America encouraged the branded goods sector to drive responsible sourcing throughout their supply chains to reach corporate sustainability targets. Their Behind the Brands Campaign has triggered noteworthy improvements to companies' efforts in this field, and they will continue their dialogue with brands.

The Sustainable Food Laboratory shared their work on how to measure performance improvement with smallholders and encouraged food companies to contribute to establishing a measurement framework aimed at identifying what impact responsible sourcing programs actually have on the ground.

Discussions focused on how companies are now extending their responsible sourcing requirements for suppliers from simple legal compliance to encompassing internationally recognised principles, such as the UN guiding principles on business and human rights, or stakeholder and societal expectations, such as protection of land rights for indigenous peoples. The bar on CSR engagement by leading branded goods companies is moving upwards; if AIM-PROGRESS members want to remain in a position to mutually recognise each others' social and ethical audits, this trend needs to be followed by a collective effort to do the same. At the same time companies need to continue their focus on closing out non-compliances to the law at supplier level. A recently released top-tips document, as well as a workshop held during the meeing, provide(d) helpful practical advice to members.

The question was debated on what members can do together to drive continuous improvement and effect positive impact on the ground at tier 2 and 3 supplier level through their responsible sourcing programs. One of the main interest areas to emerge from the discussion was how to carry out supply chain mapping to "origins" of major commonly sourced commodities.

The meeting also reviewed progress made and future plans by the work streams of the organisation: business integrity, mutual recognition, supplier capability building and environment.

The 2015 meetings will be hosted by PepsiCo, General Mills and Givaudan, alternating between Europe and the US.
