New Grievance Mechanism training deck

AIM-PROGRESS is delighted to announce the publication of  a training deck for grievance mechanisms - the latest deliverable by our Human Rights work stream under its new leadership - Sarah Smith of Kellogg.

 

The goal of this training deck is to provide guidance for implementing, operating, and maintaining an effective yet simple complaint system at the plant level for internal facilities. It can also be used as a resource to provide to suppliers as examples of best practices.

 

The deck is supposed to be a living document. If members have any additions or examples of grievance mechanisms that they know to work well, they are invited to share this for incorporation as reference.

EcoVadis HEC Barometer - Sustainable Procurement integral to business

The importance of sustainable procurement (SP) continues to grow rapidly. No longer seen as a nice-to-have discipline, SP has evolved into an integral business function to reduce costs, mitigate business risk, protect and improve brand reputation, drive revenue, and support innovation and growth.
Fortune 500 organizations across the globe are investing heavily to ensure sustainability is ingrained across all aspects of their supply chain and procurement operations. The challenge – especially for chief procurement officers (CPO) and chief
sustainability officers (CSO) - is to ensure the investment pays off and has the desired impact across the supply chain in accordance with CEOs’ and top managers’ expectations.
 
The HEC/EcoVadis Sustainable Procurement Barometer measures the evolution of SP practices in global procurement organizations and aims to provide an understanding of the SP landscape, including sector and geographical differences, industry strengths, improvement areas, new frontiers for innovation, and the potential levers for success in the future.
 
The last Barometer, published in 2013 and titled “Time To Measure Value Creation”, found global organizations struggling to harness the attention and support of top management and lacking solid footing around performance metrics and objective setting.  In this year’s report we see a theme of ‘scaling up’ emerging for established programs as we find organizations are at a critical juncture for SP growth. Covering ‘strategic’ or ‘large spend’ suppliers is simply not enough. Disasters like Tianjin and Rana Plaza are reminders that significant risks remain unaddressed in most global supply chains. There is immense scope of work to be done to cover the ‘long tail’ of risk areas representing significant risks. The more mature SP programs are seeking the right strategies and investments needed to scale up their programs to include breadth and depth of coverage of their supply base. For the first time in the HEC/EcoVadis Sustainable Procurement Barometer, an additional survey was also conducted with suppliers to gather data and insights from their perspective. Findings from this survey suggest that not only increased engagement, but also better internal alignment with suppliers will be critical to develop strategic partners to innovate on sustainability and beyond. In the coming years, sustainability in procurement will need to rapidly evolve into a new phase of maturity in order to meet the growing demands of stakeholders and executive management, and moreover to align with the ambitions of the UN COP21 Paris Agreement.

AIM-PROGRESS presenting on impact at Responsible Business Summit in June

Ethical Corporation's Responsible Business Summit on 7-8 June 2017 in London will focus on delivering social purpose and impact. AIM-PROGRESS Executive Director David Lawrence will be speaking about our worker impact measurement project, which we are driving together with Sedex and Impactt Ltd.

 

The summit agenda covers: 

  1. The end of CSR and the dawn of the Social Purpose Era: Understanding how the landscape is changing, what opportunities that align commercial and financial goals with macro societal need presents and strides required for real, positive change to result
  2. Social purpose and Impact: Using the right data to mitigate risks, measure impact and progress, deliver trust and positive social transformation
  3. Building and communicating the underlying case: Understanding your stakeholders’ agendas and finding the shared goals to co-creating alliances and coalitions with impact front of mind.

AIM-PROGRESS new co-chairs

AIM-PROGRESS is pleased to announce that it will be led in the future by two co-chairs from the membership companies. Brian Kramer, Director Global Sustainability with PepsiCo, and Benjamin Ware, Global Head of Responsible Sourcing for Nestlé, have been longstanding members of AIM-PROGRESS and will now provide leadership, in collaboration with the Executive Director, David Lawrence, and a Leadership Team made up of active AIM-PROGRESS members. Over the next three years they will be looking to further delvelop the organisation in its mission to have a positive impact on people's lives and raising the bar for responsible sourcing.

Consumer Goods Forum publishes priority principles on forced labor

In early 2016 the Consumer Goods Forum adoped a resolution recognising the issue of forced labour as "one of the most pressing social issues of our times"  and pledging to strive to eradicate it from the industry's value chains. This resolution has now been followed up with 3 priority principles to counter problematic employment practices: 

  1. Every worker should have freedom of movement
  2. No worker should pay for a job
  3. No worker should be indebted or coerced to work.

AIM-PROGRESS has many members in common with the CGF and we have contributed to the crafting of the priority principles. We are hence fully supportive of the resolution and the priority principles. The role of AIM-PROGRESS will be to help publicise and implement the principles in our supply chains.
