AIM-PROGRESS strengthens membership criteria

As AIM-PROGRESS continues to mature, the mission to enable and promote responsible sourcing practices and sustainable production systems stays the same. The level of commitment however is something that continues to rise. With this, the membership body has taken the opportunity to strengthen the membership criteria by which they all abide and new member applicants are judged. This includes requiring all members to;

  1. attend at least one general membership meeting per year
  2. participate in the annual Responsible Sourcing Practices membership survey
  3. participate in the requirements of Mutual Recognition within 12 months of joining AIM-PROGRESS
  4. agree to (co)host at least one membership or supplier event every three years.

The pro-active approach of AIM-PROGRESS members in strengthening these criteria demonstrates the commitment to growing responsible sourcing practices and the leadership position the members of this group hold in the responsible sourcing sector. AIM-PROGRESS membership meeting in Pilsen

SAB Miller hosted this year's last of three annual AIM-PROGRESS membership meetings at their brewery in Pilsen in the Czech Republic from 29-31 October. David Lawrence was confirmed as chairman for another year; new vice-chair will be Steve Fischer of Colgate-Palmolive. Tribute was paid to Stuart Kyle of Coca-Cola, who has been "vice-chairing" the initiative over the past three years and has been a staunch supporter of the program since its early days. A new part-time staff member, Chris Thurston, will replace Clare Flannery who is leaving AIM-PROGRESS to take up a position with a member company. As part of the governance discussions, it was also decided to strengthen the membership criteria for AIM-PROGRESS to ensure that the initiative remains a platform of leading companies actively engaging in responsible sourcing, rather than just talking about it. AIM-PROGRESS also confirmed its interest to collaborate more closely with GSCP (Global Social Compliance Program), an initiative under the umbrella of the Consumer Goods Forum (CGF) on a number of topics, including supplier and member capability building, auditor competence, systems interoperability, the environmental pillar of responsible sourcing. Nick Forster, of FSI-Worldwide, an ethical recruitment body, provided members with insights into the lot of migrant workers and how business can prevent labour exploitation and provide value to their companies by improving their recruitment practices based on quality and ethics. Whilst supplier compliance  remains a top focus area for AIM-PROGRESS, first discussions were also held on how to put into practice AIM-PROGRESS' strategic aspiration to "go beyond compliance", with some concrete ideas to be further formalised by the AIM-PROGRESS Leadership Team. The next meeting will be held in Miami (US) from 4-7 March 2014.

BSCI - 10 year anniversary

The Business Social Compliance Initiative (BSCI) was founded in March 2003 by a small group of European retailers in order to harmonise their respective social compliance schemes. It is led by the FTA (Foreign Trade Association). Their common code of conduct, based on the ILO core conventions and SA 8000, has grown to cover a broad number of sectors. The association now comprises over 1000 firms, associations and organisations of all sizes, from multi-nationals to small and medium-sized enterprises (SME) across all EU member states. BSCI also established a monitoring system, covering (non-mandatory) self-assessment and an initial external audit to the code of conduct, resulting in possible corrective action plans. Progress is then re-checked in an external re-audit.  BSCI conducted an achievement study to celebrate its ten-year anniversary, which is available on their website. BSCI also releases monthly newsletters on topical issues in the responsible sourcing world, the latest on wages, which is available from their homepage.

AIM-PROGRESS is currently recruiting!

AIM-PROGRESS is currently looking for a Marketing Executive to support their work in driving ethical standards in global supply chains. This role is split 60/40 between AIM-PROGRESS and Sedex and will be based at Sedex HQ in London.
