According to a 2024 ILO report, informal employment in India accounts for almost 90% of all employment in the country; this represents around 440-490 million workers. Informal work creates a significant decent work deficit for workers. The opaqueness that informality and sub-contracting bring to supply chains also makes it extremely difficult for multinational brands and suppliers to implement effective human rights due diligence and protect workers.
As the second in a series of learning events on India with the objective to strengthen AIM Progress members’, particularly those in the APAC region, capacity to engage suppliers India by having a greater contextual understanding of labour governance in India. This session will equip participants with insights on.
- The scale and nature of informal work in India including the main vulnerabilities that informal workers face
- The complexities and dynamics of both interstate and intrastate migration including the challenges they bring to decent work
- Potential solutions and good practices to address these challengesThis session is open to AIM-Progress members only.
