New primer sets out how to integrate climate action and human rights

UPDATED22 May 2025

We’re pleased to share a new resource developed for AIM-Progress by Proforest:
Humanising net zero targets – how to bring people and their rights into corporate climate action.

This practical primer addresses a critical gap in corporate sustainability planning: how to align climate strategies with human rights responsibilities. While companies increasingly recognise the link between environmental harm and human rights impacts, few have clear strategies for integrating the two in their supply chains. This document sets out how to change that.

Why it matters
There is growing recognition that supply chain resilience, reputational risk, investor expectations and regulatory compliance are all linked to how well companies manage both climate and human rights. Taking an integrated approach is no longer just good practice – it’s essential to building responsible and future-proof operations.

What the primer offers
The report outlines a structured pathway to help companies:

  • set clear commitments to joined-up climate and human rights action
  • assess risks across suppliers and sourcing regions
  • develop integrated targets and programmes
  • collaborate across the industry
  • monitor progress and adjust as needed

It also explores the current state of play across sectors such as FMCG, retail and food and drink – where efforts are still in early stages – and highlights where companies can take the lead.

What’s next
This is the first in a series of briefings commissioned by AIM-Progress. Further case studies and guidance materials will follow in the coming months, focusing on how businesses are putting integrated approaches into practice.

The primer is intended to support internal reflection and capability building across teams – from procurement and operations to sustainability and human rights.
