Sedex, a supplier audit data sharing platform used by 70% of AIM-PROGRESS members, has released an updated version of SMETA (5.0) audit protocol. SMETA version 5.0 is a comprehensive review of the audit format to date and has been reinforced quite substantially with regards to a number of topics which are important in the world of responsible sourcing, such as:
· measurement of workers’ rights by including two new chapters on impact assessments and worker management dialogue;
· extra guidance based on the UN Guiding Principles on Business & Human Rights;
· the new Ethical Trade Initiative (ETI) Base Code working hours clause
· land rights by asking auditors to check the relevant legal permissions to operate are in place at a site;
· environmental impacts by measuring how biodiversity requirements are met through the certification programs in place.
SMETA is an important reference benchmark for AIM-PROGRESS. The new version represents an enhanced baseline for AIM-PROGRESS member expectations from suppliers.
